September was a busy month for ART ON THE MOVE, with regional travel, partnership and project development, sector collaboration, exhibition openings and panel discussions, artists in residence on the road, workshops, art awards, and staff training! Read on to get a glimpse into some of our behind-the-scenes highlights from the past month.
Bringing accessibility to the forefront
Team members Riley, Maxxi, Alex and Kristen have been doing Access & Inclusion Training, delivered by DADAA. Led by the wonderful Andrea Tenger, the team have been learning and workshopping ways to increase accessibility of ART ON THE MOVE’s program. Together, they are developing an ‘accessibility toolkit’ to be utilised across all areas of the organisation, from our exhibition touring program, to learning and engagement and marketing.

Linking arts and the environment in Katanning
Riley travelled to Katanning for the opening weekend of Tributaries by Tineke Van der Eecken. It was a weekend full of art, with the exhibition opening and Arts & The Environment Panel on Saturday, followed by Tineke’s Wearable Treasures workshop on Sunday.
For the Arts & The Environment Panel, a lively conversation around WA’s natural environment, climate change, and art practice was shared between facilitator Meri Fatin, artist Tineke Van der Eecken, poet and writer Mags Webster, councillor Lynn MacLaren, artist Peter Hill, and the audience. This session was recorded, so stay tuned as we are set to release this in the coming months!
Celebrating the community art awards season
Ricky, Julianne and Riley had the joy of attending and judging art awards in September. Ricky travelled to Carnarvon for the Gascoyne Art Prize, Julianne ventured to Rubibi (Broome) for the Shinju Matsuri Art Awards, and Riley popped out to Kalgoorlie to judge the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Art Prize.
The team were impressed and inspired by the art they saw on the road. Congratulations to all exhibiting artists, and of course the prize winners.
It was an extra treat to catch our friend Famous Sharon!

National conversations – Planning for the future, together!
Ricky and Alex were in Canberra recently to represent ART ON THE MOVE at the NETS (National Exhibition Touring Support) National Meeting. The meeting was attended by other major touring organisations Museums and Galleries of NSW, Museums and Galleries of Queensland, NETS Victoria, Country Arts South Australia, Artback NT and Contemporary Arts Tasmania.
Ricky and Julianne travelled to icy Ballarat in Victoria for AMAGA’s National Conference. This year’s theme was (un)Common Ground: Collisions, Convergence, Conversations. You can read Julianne’s highlights and key takeaways in her wrap-up story here.
Finally, Ricky made a special ‘pecha kucha’ style presentation at the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial Futuring Craft Conference alongside speakers from the World Craft Council Australia, Community Arts Network and Regional Arts WA.

Our Gathaagudu artist residency commences
Rebecca McCauley and Aaron Claringbold began their residency in Gathaagudu/Shark Bay with the Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery and Visitor Centre. Over the two weeks, they immersed themselves in the landscape and meeting community members, along with plenty of wildlife! Through their residency, Rebecca and Aaron aim to produce new photographic work that highlights the profound and intricate connection between people and their environments. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for updates as they are set to return in October.
That’s it for September! We’ll be back next month for another edition of Crate News. To learn more about ART ON THE MOVE’s program, sign up to our eNews, follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
