VEILED IN A GOLDEN HUE
SHERRY QUIAMBAO
A family story told through the things we value, desire and pass on.
Veiled in a Golden Hue explores consumerism through the personal lens of family experience. In this exhibition, artist Sherry Quiambao reflects on her mother’s migration from the Philippines to Australia, and the intergenerational pressures around success, belonging, and material stability that often accompany the migrant experience.
Combining photography and video works, the exhibition features staged still life compositions alongside portraits of family members and collaborators. Everyday objects—including fruit, flowers, jewellery and domestic goods—become symbolic references to domestic labour, care, inheritance, and the circulation of goods across borders.
Gold surfaces recur throughout, referencing both emergency survival blankets and the promise of prosperity often associated with migration. Through richly constructed interiors where humour, beauty and tension coexist, Veiled in a Golden Hue considers how aspiration and material desire shape identity and everyday life.
Boorloo/Perth-based multidisciplinary artist Sherry Quiambao draws on her Filipina heritage and family history to explore memory, migration and the ways material culture shapes identity and belonging. Working across photography, video, sculpture and installation, her practice examines how everyday objects and domestic spaces reflect aspiration, care and intergenerational experience.
Regional areas across Australia, especially Western Australia, are home to significant Filipino migrant communities, yet Filipino voices remain largely absent from arts programming. As an Australian artist of Filipina heritage who grew up in regional WA, this exhibition speaks directly to those communities while also inviting broader audiences into shared stories of migration and intergenerational resilience.
